CHINA. Guilin. 1979. At the village of Xingping there is a small ferry. This
ferry is used every weekday morning around seven o’clock by children in a hurry
to get to school and by farmers who take their buffalo to the fields. They will
spend the day working on the other side of the river. I tried to photograph this
scene numerous times from a small motorboat, but the sound of the engine excited
the water buffalo swimming in the river next to the boat. When we turned off the
engine, the flow of the river almost drove our boat into the ferry and the
buffalo. Things just did not seem to go right.
